What is the tithe?

The word “tithe” literally means tenth or 10%. Although the tithe was a part of the law of Moses (Leviticus 27:30-34), the first tithe was given by Abraham far before the law was established (Genesis 14:19-20). Abraham gives a tithe to Melchizedek as a response to God’s blessing in his life. Jacob also offered a tithe before the law (Genesis 28:20-22) responding to a dream he received from God. All throughout the Bible, tithing was practiced as a reminder that God is the supplier of everything. It teaches us to alway put God first in our lives (Deuteronomy 14:23 TLB).

Why tithe?

Jesus warned His followers to “be on their guard against all kinds of greed” (Luke 12:15). He went as far as to say that the competition for a heart after God would be greed and the love of money (Matthew 6:24). Greed is a disease of the heart and creates separation of relationships, both with God and with others. To combat the disease of greed and it’s terrible consequences, God established a plan to regularly give a percentage of your income first to Him. This practice is called the tithe. Not only would the tithe combat greed, if followed, God also promised blessing in return (Deuteronomy 15:10; Proverbs 11:25; Malachi 3:8–12).

Where to tithe?

When Moses set up the law for the Israelites he told the people that their tithes would go to the Levites (Numbers 18:21) for the service of the temple. The Levites were the tribe responsible for the temple, or the nation’s church. Thousands of years later, the prophet Malachi reaffirmed that the tithe was purposed for the church (Malachi 3:10). The storehouse, Malachi talked about, was the temple in which you received your spiritual food. In other words, the whole tithe is to go to your local church. The church was then instructed to use the tithe for the priests (Numbers 18:21, 2 Chronicles 31:4-5), to help widows and orphans (Deuteronomy 14:28-29), as well as for events and festivals to proclaim the greatness of our God (Deuteronomy 14:22). The same is true today. The tithe is used for the salaries of pastors called to minister God to the people as well as for the running of the church and for the ministry to the poor and needy in our communities.

Beyond My Tithe

“Beyond the tithe” is anything you give beyond 10%. The expectation of the people in the Bible was to bring their tithes as well as “offerings” (Amos 4:4-5). Beyond the tithe is a chance for you to be extravagantly generous. You can give additional gifts to the tithe fund, or to a specific project like MyCityCare, Not4Sale, Victory Missions, and more. God promises that if you are generous, He will be generous back (Proverbs 3:9-10, Proverbs 19:17, Proverbs 28:27) So go ahead and experience God’s generosity!

We believe everyone can make a difference.
MyCityCare is the practical expression of the heart of our church to be a light in our community and give hope and dignity to those who are in need.  We believe everyone has a part to play and therefore our heart is to mobilize YOU to make a difference in the lives of others.  We provide opportunities for volunteers to serve through our programs, services and projects to meet the needs of the people living in there own backyard. Our programs focus on mobilizing the church to take action in the areas of: Food & Water, Housing, Clothing, Healthcare and Social Justice. Throughout the year we will have different projects and campaigns that you can get involved in highlighting each one of these areas.

Children as young as three years old are illegally trafficked and sexually abused in secret rooms of public brothels. They are offered several times per day to tourists and locals alike, and earn money for their abductors and keepers. These children have no one to go to for help, and thus endure horrific abuse for many years of their lives. The vision of Not4Sale is to raise funds and to establish safe-houses for children who are exploited in the sex industry. Not4Sale is setting up safe-houses with the goal to provide long-term safe-havens and education to numerous young girls. These children need a place where they know they are loved; a place where they can heal physically and emotionally; and a place where they can be children again. Our safe-homes provide a home environment where the girls will have counselling, training in a trade and a family structure with house parents and other girls.
